Digital Wardrobe App for Men: How to Build a Closet You'll Actually Use

What a digital wardrobe app for men should do, what to look for before you download one, and how to set up your first 20 items in Byde on iPhone or Android.

  • Digital closet
  • Menswear
  • Byde

Most men don't need more clothes. They need to see the ones they already have. You open the wardrobe, grab the same three shirts you always wear, and the rest of it sits there. A digital wardrobe app fixes that by putting your clothes on your phone, so you can see everything at once and build outfits from it. The trouble is that most wardrobe apps were built with womenswear in mind, or they turn getting dressed into a project. This guide covers what a digital wardrobe app for men should do, what to check before you download one, and how to set up your first closet in about the time it takes to make a coffee.

What a digital wardrobe app actually does

A digital wardrobe, or digital closet, is a catalogue of the clothes you own, kept on your phone. You add each piece, usually with a photo, and the app sorts it into categories like shirts, knitwear, trousers, jackets, and shoes. From there, a good app helps you do something useful with it:

  • See everything you own without digging through drawers.
  • Build outfits from those pieces, either yourself or with suggestions.
  • Plan ahead for the week or for a trip.
  • Learn what you actually wear, and what's just taking up space.

The point isn't the catalogue. It's spending less time deciding and more time wearing clothes you already like.

Why most wardrobe apps don't fit men

When we started building Byde, the problem was simple: despite owning plenty of clothes, getting dressed in the morning felt harder than it should. Existing wardrobe apps were either built for women, overwhelmingly complex, or turned getting dressed into a project. There were no tools built for how men actually think about style. That means practical and direct, with no mood boards and no fashion editorials. Just the clothes in front of you and a day to get through.

That's the gap a men's wardrobe app should fill. Categories, fits, and style profiles should match how men actually dress, and the app should give you a real outfit back rather than another board of inspiration.

Setting up your first closet: a 20-item start

You don't need to photograph your entire wardrobe. Start with the pieces you actually wear. Byde's free plan includes up to 20 of your own items, which is a good number to aim for on day one anyway.

  1. 1Download Byde for iPhone or Android.
  2. 2Pick your 20. Open your wardrobe and pull out what you've worn in the last few weeks. Ignore the "one day" pieces for now.
  3. 3Split them roughly like this: a few tops (T-shirts, shirts, a knit), two or three bottoms (jeans, chinos, trousers), one or two outer layers, and two or three pairs of shoes.
  4. 4Photograph each item once. Lay it flat or hang it against a plain background. One photo per item is enough.
  5. 5Fill gaps from the Closet library. If you own a plain white T-shirt but don't want to photograph it, add a matching item from the library instead.
  6. 6Set your style profile. The style finder starts from how you dress now and how you'd like to dress, then moves suggestions toward that without pushing you out of your comfort zone.
  7. 7Generate your first outfit. Tell Byde the occasion, such as a work meeting, a date, or weekend coffee, and it builds a weather-aware outfit from your closet. On the free plan you get one AI-generated outfit per day.
  8. 8Try Free Play. Drag and drop pieces to build outfits yourself. Manual outfits are unlimited on the free plan.

That's it. You can add more later, but 20 pieces you actually wear will already give you more combinations than you're probably using now.

Free vs Premium

Byde is free to download on iPhone and Android. Premium's standard price is $4.99 USD per month, or $39.99 per year. The App Store and Google Play show the price for your region. Here's how the plans split:

Free plan

  • Digital closet with up to 20 of your own items
  • One AI-generated outfit per day
  • Unlimited Free Play (manual outfits)
  • The Closet library

Premium

  • Unlimited outfit generation
  • Trip and week planning
  • Closet analytics
  • Unlimited items you add yourself

Start free. If you want more items or planning ahead, Premium is there. The FAQ has the full free-versus-Premium table.

Getting more out of your digital closet

Once your closet is in the app, a few habits make it genuinely useful:

  • Build around a favourite piece. Pre-select pieces that should be part of an outfit and let Byde build the rest around them.
  • Keep the laundry up to date. Mark what's in the laundry so suggestions use what's actually clean.
  • Plan the week on Sunday. With Premium, schedule outfits for the days ahead so you're not deciding when you're already late. The same idea works for travel in the men's travel packing list and outfit plan.
  • Check your analytics. Closet analytics show what you actually wear, which pieces earn their space, and which combinations you've been missing. It's a quick way to see whether you're ready for a capsule wardrobe.

What about privacy?

You're photographing your clothes, so it's a fair question. Photos you upload are stored so Byde can show your closet and generate outfits. We don't sell your personal data. AI providers process images only to power those features, and not to train their general models without your consent. You can delete your account and data from the app: Profile, then Delete Account. Full details are in the Privacy Policy and the FAQ.
