How We Fixed Our Broken App Store Links on TikTok (and Built a Free Tool Because of It)

TikTok's in-app browser blocked our Byde App Store and Play Store links with an 'Action can't be completed' error. Here's how we solved it, and why we built pleaseopen.me for every app maker.

We hit 1,000 followers on TikTok, which is the milestone that unlocks a clickable link in your bio. We were excited. We had an app to promote — Byde — and we finally had a place to put the download link.

Then we tested it, and it didn't work.

This is the story of what broke, what we tried, and why we ended up building pleaseopen.me, a free tool that fixes this problem for any app maker or creator. The longer version of how TikTok and Instagram block store links lives on the pleaseopen.me blog.

The moment it broke

Getting the bio link on TikTok took a while, so we were eager to use it. We put our App Store link in the bio and tapped it from an iPhone. Then we put our Google Play link in and tapped it from an Android phone.

Both gave the same result. Nothing opened, and no store page loaded.

For an app maker, that's a serious problem. TikTok is one of the few places where a small app can get real reach, and the one link that turns a viewer into a download was dead.

Why this happens

When you tap a link inside TikTok, it doesn't open in Safari or Chrome. It opens in TikTok's in-app browser, a stripped-down web view inside the app. That in-app browser doesn't hand off to the App Store or Play Store the way a normal browser does.

The result is that the store link fails, on iPhone and Android alike, even though the same link works fine everywhere else. Instagram does a version of the same thing. The fix that works: get people out of the in-app browser

After some digging, we found that the workaround is simple in theory:

1Get the visitor to leave TikTok's in-app browser and open the page in their real browser (Safari or Chrome).
2From the real browser, the App Store or Play Store link opens normally and isn't blocked.

The in-app browser is the whole problem, and once someone is out of it, the store link works. On TikTok you can't force that escape automatically. The visitor has to be shown how to open the page in their browser, using the menu in the corner of the in-app browser. Once they do, they get redirected to the right store.

Why we didn't just pay for an existing tool

We weren't the first to run into this, so we looked at existing services that solve it. One of them charged over $150 per year, with no monthly option and no free tier. For a small indie team just starting to build an audience, that was hard to justify for something as basic as making a link work.

So we decided to build it ourselves.

Once it was working for us, the obvious question was why we'd keep it to ourselves. Every creator and app maker on TikTok hits this same wall. So we decided to open it up to everyone, and to make it free and easy to set up. That's how pleaseopen.me came to be.

What pleaseopen.me does

You claim a short link like pleaseopen.me/yourname, add your store links, and put that single link in your bio. Here's what happens when someone taps it:

On TikTok: visitors see a short, clear tutorial on opening the page in their browser, then they're redirected to the correct store.
On Instagram and Facebook: the in-app browser is escaped automatically, and they land in the store in one step.

Setup takes about a minute, and most of it is free. Byde's own download button uses it today.

The extras we ended up building

Once the core problem was solved, we ran into other things we wanted as app makers, so we built those too.

One link for every store

TikTok only lets you have one link in your bio. If your app is on both iOS and Android, that's a problem. With pleaseopen.me, you put multiple store links under a single link, and it automatically sends each visitor to the right store for their device: the App Store for iPhone users, Google Play for Android users.

Analytics on who's actually clicking

It's hard to improve what you can't measure. You can see how many people clicked, where they were sent, which countries they came from, and more. If you're posting content to drive downloads, this tells you whether it's working.

“Coming soon” pages for stores you haven't launched on

Maybe your app is only on Android so far, or you're still waiting on App Store review. Instead of sending iPhone users to a dead end, you can create a coming-soon landing page for the store you haven't published to yet.

Free privacy policy and ads.txt hosting

Something we ran into as a small app studio: both Apple and Google require a live privacy policy URL for your store listing, and ad networks like AdMob look for an app-ads.txt file on your developer website. If you don't have a website, that's an annoying obstacle.

Multi-button link pages

If you want more than store buttons, you can create a multi-button page in the style of Linktree or Beacons, but with buttons that actually get people out of the in-app browser and into the store. You can also keep your existing Linktree or Beacons page and just swap your store button for a pleaseopen.me link.

What we learned

A milestone can hide a problem. We worked hard to reach 1K followers and only discovered the store links were broken once we got there.
Workarounds are easier when you understand the cause. Once we knew the in-app browser was the culprit, the fix was clear.
The best tools come from your own frustration. We built this because we needed it, and because charging $150+ a year for a basic link didn't feel right.
